Description

If you haven't seen it yet, the preview solicit for STH#196 reveals the debut of Super Scourge.

With permission from my editor, I'm uploading the concept designs we went through for his color selection.

As stated in the image, color concepts #A-E and the organization of the piece was done by me.

Original line art, inks, and concept #F were done by :iconyardley:

I was wrestling with how Super Scourge should be shown. As #A shows, I was thinking that the "complete" transition into gold would be the most canon-safe. And like Super Sonic and Shadow before him, his clothing would remain unchanged. #A is also the ugliest, most boring of the options. I like sticking to the rules, but sometimes you've got to err on the side of awesome.

#B shows the other line of thinking: the inverse color. Super Sonic is yellow-based gold. Super Shadow is white-based gold. Super Scourge, therefore, would be pinky-purple. Since that wouldn't go with gold at all, I thought a "jewel-shine" would work.

I really liked the mental image of a white leather jacket with the blue flame, as introduced in #C. I still think it's a neat idea, but I'm not sure if it would've worked in the end.

To get this all to work, though, I needed line art to color. Tracy not only provided the line art, but he modified an old Scourge pic to have the up-turned spines. We conferenced and he came up with #F. I put together the collage you see now and that was sent off to Mike Pellerito who had the final say.

Ultimately I'm very happy with what we decided on. Super Scourge looks awesome! And now you all can enjoy a little glimpse into the creation process.

It was sad to see this character go. It was around this time that I stopped collecting (maybe around 205), but I remember being really excited over this arc. I'm glad this design was chosen and didn't stir up and confusion between Super Sonic prime and Super Scourge. Discovering this now was such a throwback. Thanks for actually making those years of my childhood so much more enjoyable, Flynn and Yardley
